Researchers Advance CNT-Based Networks Staff - 07/24/2008
In what appears to be a major advance in carbon nanotube-based circuits, researchers from Purdue University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign said they have succeeded in building networks of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The team solved the problem of metallic CNTs causing short circuits by cutting the network into precise strips. The effort could advance the field of flexible circuits and displays, they said. More
Visionox Readies First Volume OLED Line Yao Gang, Editor-in-Chief, SI China - 06/11/2008
Visionox (Beijing, China) said its volume OLED production line will begin operation in October in Kunshan, Jiangsu. The company said it has started installing production equipment at the plant, which is expected to have an annual capacity of more than 10 million small-size OLED devices. Visionox’s OLED technology derives from R&D at Tsinghua University, where several professors began basic OLED research in 1996.

Holding the potential to accelerate commercialization of flexible organic light emitting diodes (OLED) displays, the US Display Consortium reported that a cooperative R&D program with GE Global Research has been completed whereby GE has demonstrated an ultra high barrier thin-film encapsulation process on a wide variety of OLED structures through a batchmode, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition process.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based semiconductor, display and solar panel manufacturing equipment giant Applied Materials Inc reported net sales for its fiscal Q2 ended April 27 that were down 15% from fiscal Q2 2007, and up 3% from fiscal Q1. Company execs noted on a call with Wall Street analysts that it expects fiscal Q3 to mark the bottom in silicon revenues.

Splinter Sees Weak Order Period Looming for Equipment Vendors David Lammers, News Editor - 05/13/2008
Applied Materials CEO Michael Splinter said the third fiscal quarter may see silicon equipment sales drop by 40% from the second fiscal quarter ending April 27, representing the bottom of the current downcycle. Orders from flash vendors in particular have been less than expected. One bright spot was introduction of the Aera2 mask inspection system, which is being used by four customers now, he said.

Scientists from Singapore’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering have developed a barrier film that enables a significantly longer lifetime for plastic electronic devices such as low-cost solar cells, flexible displays and OLEDs. Reaffirming their liquid crystal display (LCD) panel manufacturing alliance, Samsung and Sony have plans to jointly construct a third flat-screen factory in South Korea, according to filings with the Korea Stock Exchange. The companies are planning to invest $1.8 billion (1.8 trillion Korean won) on an eighth-generation (8G) production line through their S-LCD joint venture that already operates two factories in Tangjeong in South Korea.
